Our middle school students are pioneering a remarkable land restoration initiative, seamlessly integrating hands-on learning with environmental stewardship. The Okanagan and Similkameen Invasive Species Society's 'Students Plant for the Future' project engages students in actively planning and maintaining plots of land, nurturing a deep-rooted connection with nature. As students work to restore up to two hectares of land, they gain valuable insights into the intricate relationships between native plants, wildlife and Indigenous plant species. Our students are currently working on Max Lake, located west of Penticton. The area is a wetland habitat conserved by the Land Conservancy and the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen.
This project serves as a shining example of the boundless potential for positive change when knowledge, passion, and community come together.
“It’s a fabulous learning opportunity for the students. Being outdoors helps students develop a sense of place and learning through exploring their environment.” ~ Mr. Buller
